Professor Shiv K. Kumar
Eminent poet, critic, short-story writer
and novelist, Shiv K. Kumar passed away on 28 February 2017 at Hyderabad. He
was born in Lahore, British India, in 1921. In 1943, he started teaching at
D.A.V. College, Lahore, and after Partition, he joined Hansraj College,
University of Delhi, and went to Cambridge University to obtain his Ph.D.
degree on the Stream-of-Consciousness Novel, under the supervision of Professor
David Daiches. He was also taught by F.R. Leavis, during his stay at Cambridge.
Shiv K. Kumar taught English at Osmania
University, Hyderabad, for a number of years and retired as Vice-Chancellor of
the University of Hyderabad. He was distinguished Visiting Professor at the
Universities of Oklahama and Northern Iowa, and Visiting Professor at the
Universities of Drake and Marshall. He was also a visiting Fulbright Fellow at
Yale University. In 1978, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of
Literature, London. In 1987, he received Sahitya Akademi Award for his
poems Trapfalls in the Sky. In 2001, he was awarded the Padma
Bhushan for his contribution to literature.
Professor Kumar was known for his
oratory, intellectual discourse and a subtle sense of humour.
Professor Kumar was founder member and
Academic Advisor of the Indian Society for Commonwealth Studies. He delivered
the Inaugural Address at the International Commonwealth Literature Conference
held at OUCIP in 2014. Our heartfelt condolences for the departed soul.
Professor Kumar was known for his oratory,
intellectual brilliance and a subtle sense of humour. He was eminent scholar of
Urdu literature as well. He translated several famous Urdu works into English
including those by Ghalib. He was a musician too and recited Urdu ghazals
accompanied with harmonium.
Professor Kumar was founder member and
Academic Advisor of the Indian Society for Commonwealth Studies. He delivered
the Inaugural Address at the International Commonwealth Literature Conference
held at OUCIP in 2014.
