SEMINAR 1 PREAMBLE
The Theme of the Seminar
Recent developments in literary studies have opened fresh avenues of academic adventures and have necessitated the refreshing of outdated, outmoded and much trodden literary tracks. The branching of mainstream literatures have created new centres for academic exploration very much in line with modern revolutionary yet conservative thoughts on margins being necessarily negotiated if mainstreams have to survive. Thus came into literature and literary study the so far side-lined and side-stepped realms of gender, nature and minoritized cultures. The advent of new literatures, as meta margins, opened up academic insights made socially and culturally relevant in the areas of so far unexplored regions of harsh realities within and between societies, religions, races, gender and cultures across the world. From looking at margins within humans to looking on margins within nature (elemental and human) was only another adventure in ecocriticial leap for writers, critics and academicians, striving to explore and explain the need for both looking at literature as “a simultaneous order” “even while perceiving nature” as a complementary organic and irreplaceable organizing whole. Interconnection, interdependence and intertextuality have now become relevant and relativizing factors of academic questions.

The boundaries between nature and man have been politically marked and culturally unmarked such that like the wall that needs mending, and mends as well. The study of interconnecting relationship between nature, man and the act of writing is a creative act of mending even while it throws harsh light on areas that need mending. The exploitation and abuse of our planet is in no way less abusive of the map of misreading nature in literature. This seminar aims at looking into literature and literary theories in order to identify, explore, and express elements of rejuvenation and remediation of all; to sustain and not support the metabolic act of recreation. The focus therefore will be on relating the value of an integrated and intertextual approach to eco-critical studies in literature with due relativization to inevitable culture, nature and gender equations resultant in this organic whole of a simultaneous order of existence.

UGC Sponsored National Seminar on NATURE IN LITERATURE
A Report
A tree is known by its fruits. So is an academic institution which has to prove its mettle by the seminars, symposiums and conferences it organizes. 12 December 2007 happened to be a red letter day in the annals of the Research Department of English, Bishop Heber College, Trichy. Apart from the other activities, it saw the fruits of yet another endeavour by way of organizing a one day UGC Sponsored National Seminar on ‘Nature in Literature’. This seminar was organized in collaboration with OSLE-India on 12 December 2007.

The inaugural session started with the welcome and introduction of the guest to the august gathering by Dr. Roopkumar Balasingh, Head and Dean of Arts, Department of English, and Advisor of the Seminar. Dr. Marcus Diepen Boominathan, Principal, Bishop Heber College, Trichy delivered the presidential address. Dr. Nirmal Selvamony, Reader in English, Madras Christian College, Chennai & President, OSLE-India rendered the key note address on the theme ‘Water in contemporary Tamil Literature: An Oikocritical Approach’. His speech set the tone for the seminar for he elucidated on the treatment of Nature in different discourses such as Nature writing, Environmental studies, Ecology, Ecocriticism and Oikocriticism.

Five concurrent sessions were organized and 120 papers were presented in all. Deliberations on each paper were carried out meticulously by the moderators of each session. Around 300 participants from across the country showed their spirited participation in the seminar. The sessions came to a grand finale with the valedictory ceremony in which the souvenirs and certificates along with the conference kit were presented to the participants. Prof. N. Krishnasamy, CIEFL, Hyderabad delivered his valedictory address on ‘Ecolinguistics’.

Dr. Suresh Frederick, Reader, UG Head Department of English & the Organizing Secretary of the Seminar, rendered the vote of thanks. The participants were enormously benefited by the different perspectives put forth by the presenters and resource persons. On the whole, the seminar on ‘Nature in Literature’ proved to be not only a ‘knowledge sharing’ experience but also dissemination of vision to protect and conserve Nature.
